Sutton Coldfield care home invites community to honour VE Day

On Thursday 8th May, from 11am-2pm, Care UK’s Bishops Manor, on Jockey Road is welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with its very own 1940s-themed street party.

VE Day was celebrated on 8th May 1945, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.

At Bishops Manor, the team has been hard at work organising their own special commemorative event in partnership with Age Concern Birmingham, which will see residents and guests enjoy an afternoon of delicious food and wartime-themed entertainment. There will also be plenty of classic tunes for visitors to dance to as they embrace the spirit of the 1940s.

The home is also hosting celebrations on the 7th May which will feature a nostalgic performance of wartime classics by Bishop Manor resident, Becca G. Following the entertainment, there will be a private VIP luncheon for seven resident veterans, Age Concern Birmingham veterans, and the local community.

Resident Ambassador and Bishops Manor founding resident Sid Knight, 89, said: “The VE Day celebrations are meaningful to every one of us in some way. I remember the fear in the air as a child, but also the overwhelming relief and joy when it was all over, the street parties, the music, the togetherness the sound of church bells again. I'm really looking forward to commemorating it all here, together, with my Bishops Manor family.
