About this Event
Prestbury Choral Society Spring Concert
Haydn’s Nelson Mass, first performed in London, where the British naval hero, Admiral Horatio Nelson, was a prominent figure, has a powerful and dramatic character, and may have been associated with Nelson’s naval victories. The work showcases Haydn’s mastery of musical and choral writing, contrasting moments of sombre and intense atmosphere with movements of grandeur and exuberance. Haydn’s innovative style offers an exciting and dynamic listening experience for the audience.
Mozart’s Solemn Vespers (1780), is anything but solemn! Unlike many of Mozart’s sacred works, the Vesperae Solemnes, written for the Salzburg Cathedral, reflects the grandeur of a public liturgical occasion, featuring rich choral and musical forces. Throughout this work there is a brilliant interplay of choral and solo vocal parts, creating moments of intense drama and serene beauty. It is a masterpiece, a profound expression of faith and musical excellence, celebrated for its beauty and emotional depth.
With Conductor Gary Hulme, Organist John Legrove, and soloists Charlotte Laidlaw (soprano), Joyce Tindsley (Contralto), Philip O’Connor (Tenor), and Jonny Hill (Bass), this promises to be a wonderful evening.
The concert is on Saturday, 5th April 2025 at 7.30pm, at St Bartholomew’s Church, Wilmslow, SK9 1AW.
